When typhoons are battering Luzon and Visayas from July to October, Vietnam's most popular destinations — Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Phu Quoc — are enjoying some of their best weather of the year. That's not a coincidence. It's an opportunity.
This guide breaks down exactly when to go, where to go, and how to match Vietnam's regional weather patterns with the Philippine typhoon calendar — so you can plan a trip that's sunny, comfortable, and stress-free.
The Philippines Typhoon Calendar: When to Escape
According to PAGASA, the Philippine typhoon season runs roughly from June to November, with peak activity in:
August — average 3.2 typhoons per month
September — average 3.1 typhoons per month
October — average 2–4 typhoons expected
The months of December to May are significantly calmer, with January to March being the safest and driest period for most of the Philippines.
Bottom line for Vietnam travel planning:
June to October → Escape the Philippines, head to Vietnam
November to May → Either destination works; Vietnam is excellent
Vietnam's Weather by Region: A Quick Guide
Vietnam stretches over 1,650 km from north to south, so the weather varies significantly by region. What's rainy in one area may be perfectly sunny in another at the same time.
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa)
Best months: March–April and October–November

The Sweet Spot for Filipino Travelers: June to August
This is the period most Filipino families travel — school holidays, summer break, avoiding peak typhoon months at home. And it works very well for Vietnam, with one important note about which region to choose.
June to August in Vietnam:
Ha Long Bay (North): Hot and humid, some rain, but the bay is still beautiful and most cruise operators run normally. Mist and dramatic clouds actually make for incredible photos.
Hoi An & Da Nang (Central): This is actually prime season for central Vietnam's beaches. Hot and dry, perfect for the beach. Da Nang's beach resorts are fully operational. Ba Na Hills is fun year-round.
Phu Quoc (South): Technically the rainy season, but Phu Quoc's west-facing position means it gets significantly less rain than mainland southern Vietnam. Most days are still sunny, and prices are lower.
Our recommendation for Filipino families traveling June–August: Start with Hoi An and Da Nang for beach time, then fly to Phu Quoc for island relaxation. Avoid basing your whole trip around Ha Long Bay in July–August if you want guaranteed sunshine.
The Best Months if You Can Choose Freely: March–April
If you have flexibility on timing — school break in March, Holy Week in April — this is Vietnam's golden window. March and April offer pleasant, mild temperatures in the north (18°C to 25°C), dry conditions in the central region, and sunny, warm weather in the south (25°C to 32°C).

October–November: The Underrated Window
Most Filipinos don't think of October as travel season because it's peak typhoon time at home. But for Vietnam, it's one of the best months of the year — particularly for the North.
October and November in northern Vietnam bring mild temperatures of 20–28°C, golden rice terraces, and some of the clearest skies of the year — perfect for sightseeing in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay cruises.
The trade-off: central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang) should be avoided in October–November due to its own rain season. But Ha Long Bay and Phu Quoc are both excellent.
Practical Tips for Filipino Travelers
Book early for peak periods. March–April and July–August are high demand. Ha Long Bay cruises, in particular, sell out weeks in advance during school holidays.
Pack for both heat and light rain. Vietnam's weather can shift quickly. A light waterproof jacket takes up no space and saves the day. Quick-dry clothing is essential for summer travel.
Check regional weather before each leg of your trip. Because Vietnam's regions have different weather patterns, always verify conditions for each specific city — don't assume that good weather in Hanoi means good weather in Hoi An on the same day.
Build in flexibility for Ha Long Bay. Occasional fog or storms can affect cruise schedules. Choose tour operators (like us) who offer rebooking options or alternative activities if conditions change.
When Do Most Filipinos Actually Visit Vietnam?
Based on flight and tourism data, the highest volume of Filipino visitors arrives in:
July — peak of PH school break, typhoon season push
August — sustained school holiday travel
